Male Infertility and Varicocele Ligation

About 25% of all infertility is caused by sperm defect and 40-50% of infertility cases have a sperm defect as the main cause, or a contributing cause. This is referred to as male factor infertility.

Varicoceles are enlarged varicose veins that occur in the scrotum, most commonly on the left side . They are fairly common, affecting 15 out of 100 men overall and 40 out of 100 men with known infertility.

Varicocele repair is done to improve male fertility. It can usually be done surgically on an outpatient basis using general anesthetic. A small incision is made in the lower abdomen close to where the testicles originally descended through the abdominal wall. The veins that cause  the varicocele are identified and ligated to restrict blood outflow from the varicocele.  There is also a nonsurgical repair that may be considered.  Dr. Levran will do a comprehensive exam  and then discuss all treatment options.  Click here to learn more.
